Daihatsu . How to Choose a Torque ConverterA torque converter is primarily used to increase the horsepower and torque available to accelerate a vehicle from a dead stop. It allows an automatic transmission to operate similar to a manual transmission. In a manual transmission, the engine rpm can be raised to increase the horsepower and torque prior to engaging the clutch. The stall converter allows stepping on the brake and raising the rpm prior to launching. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Step by Step : 1 Determine the exact weight of the vehicle, including passenger and fuel. Determine the exact size of the camshaft and at what operating range it is designed for. The camshaft information can be found on the camshaft card that came with the cam. 2 Determine the brake horsepower of the vehicle using a dynometer. Determine the tire size in terms of contact patch by measuring the footprint of the tire. Determine the usage and rpm range desired. If towing is the major concern, a low rpm stall to give more torque for initial pulling from a stop is all that is needed. The higher the stall is, the higher the rpm will be when cruising. 3 Determine the gear ratio in the rear. Call the manufacturer or the speed shop with this information. They can look up the proper stall converter that gives the optimum performance for the intended purpose. ResourcesB & M Torque ConvertersTCI Torque Converters
Daihatsu . How to Know if a Torque Converter Is BrokenTorque converters are used in automatic transmissions in lieu of a clutch assembly. The torque converter transfers the power to the transmission and drive wheels. It does this by "spooling up" and locking the engine and transmission together, similar to how a clutch assembly works, but is able to do it automatically instead of making the driver manually shift gears and engage the engine and transmission. While typically trouble-free, torque converters can--and do--malfunction, so here are some things to look for when you suspect a broken torque converter. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Step by Step : 1 Start the engine and allow the vehicle to reach normal operating temperature. Make sure the vehicle is on a level or flat surface. 2 Shift the vehicle into "Drive." 3 Let your foot off the brake pedal but do not press on the accelerator. You should notice the vehicle start to "creep" forward. This is a good indication that the torque converter is working. If the vehicle does not creep, and you are on a flat road, then it may indicate that the torque converter has failed. 4 Press on the accelerator. If the vehicle bucks or revs up before engaging and moving forward, this may indicate a torque converter that is about to fail. It should be noted, however, that a delay in gear engagement may mean that you just need to add transmission fluid. Rough gear engagement can also be symptomatic of serious transmission problems. 5 Press the brake pedal and hold it while pressing on the accelerator pedal. Do not allow the vehicle to move, but note the maximum RPMs (if your vehicle has a tachometer) that your vehicle reaches. This is called the "stall test." Check the maximum RPMs against the manufacturer's specifications for stall test RPMs. This information is found in the vehicle's service manual. Tips & Warnings For specific information about stall test specifications for your vehicle, consult the particular vehicle's manual (see Resources). Do not perform a stall test on vehicles equipped with ABS or traction control. *Chapter 14: Keeping Your Car from Getting Heartburn JQ 7 Figure 14-1: Removing a radiator cap safely. 2. Tilt the cap as you remove it so that the opening points away from you (and anyone else nearby) — again, see Figure 14-1. This way, if there's still enough heat and pressure to spray hot stuff around, it lands on the engine or inside the hood, where it can do no harm. Be particularly sure to follow this procedure if you don't have a safety cap. Of course, if the engine is completely cold, you face no risk at all, so try to do routine peeking into your radiator in the morning before you warm up the car. Get into the habit of checking your coolant level at least once a month (as part of the under-the-hood check in Chapter 3). The following cautions apply no matter which type of vehicle you have. AJetferadd cold Water to a hot engine! Adding cold water to an engine that's hot can crack the engine block because the hot metal contracts sharply when the cold water hits it. If you must add water to an engine that's still warm, always do so with the engine running. This way, the cold water joins the stream of hot water that's circulating through the system, rather than falling all at once into the system when you start the engine again. 29$ Part "l: Keeping Your Car in Good Condition, System by System Under normal conditions, a 50/50 mix of water and coolant is preferred for most vehicles. If the temperature is extremely hot or cold, a higher propor tion of coolant/antifreeze may be necessary. (See "Determining whether your coolant needs changing" later in this chapter.) Don't oVerfitt the system! Daihatsu . How big can tires be on the road in tennessee?
Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Extended Cab & Chassis. * If you do overfill the system, the extra liquid gets hot, expands, and flows out of the overflow pipe. Because coolant is toxic, it can harm animals, who love its sweet taste (see "Keeping coolant out of the mouths of babes and small animals" later in this chapter). If you don't have coolant on hand and you just need to add a little liquid, plain old tap water will do. But try to maintain a good coolant level by adding a similar amount of straight coolant the next time you add liquid to the system. Several types of coolant are on the market. If your vehicle has an aluminum engine, make sure that the coolant container specifies that it's safe for alu minum engines. If you have extended-life coolant in the system, only add extended-life coolant to it. Checking and adding liquid to a coolant recovery system If your vehicle lacks a coolant recovery system, installing one is a good idea (see the sidebar "Installing a coolant recovery kit" later in this chapter). Until then, skip this section and follow the instructions in the section "Checking and adding liquid to a radiator." Most vehicles have a coolant recovery system that makes opening the radiator unnecessary. Figure 14-2 shows you what a coolant recovery system looks like. Most cooling systems with coolant recovery systems are considered "sealed" because the safety pressure cap is on the recovery reservoir rather than on the radiator. On these systems, check the level of liquid, check whether the coolant needs changing, and add water and coolant by opening the cap on the reservoir rather than opening the cap on the radiator. This "bleeds" the system by forcing any air that may have gotten into the system into the reservoir and out through its overflow pipe when the car heats up. 1. Check the liquid level. Look at the outside of the reservoir to see where the level of the liquid in it lies relative to the "Max" and "Min" lines embossed on the side. (Refer to Figure 14-2.) .
